The student nurse extern is a currently enrolled nursing student in an accredited nursing program and is in good standing. They must have:
- Successful completion of fundamentals in nursing course
- Documented competency in fundamental nursing skills (skills checklist)
The Student Nurse Extern Role focuses on:
- Providing a therapeutic milieu
- Participating in treatment team
- Health promotion and health maintenance
- Admission assessment and discharge teaching
- Patient medication and diagnosis education
- Utilization of clinical skills and knowledge
- Participation in crisis intervention
- Enhance coping abilities, and redirection
The Student Nurse Extern will:
- Practice in a multidisciplinary team environment to enhance behavioral management and coping skills.
- Participate as part of the treatment team to coordinate and review the client’s treatment plan and progress.
- Assist in coordinating care with family members and significant others as necessary during treatment, as well as at discharge.
